A high-traffic area

The Port of Liège is a major traffic hub. It’s both a destination for visiting boaters and the starting point for river cruises. Located on the right bank of the Meuse, the port is easily accessible from the city centre and offers direct access to the river.

With a capacity of up to 150 boats, the site includes docks and modern, fully-equipped pontoons. Facilities include water and electricity supply points, restrooms, and lifting equipment for boats.

This high-traffic site needed a bold riverside urban design to reflect the dynamism and identity of Liège.

I. Steps for designing a riverside development

1) Needs assessment

Identify the specific requirements of the marina: beautifying the waterfront, improving accessibility, and creating rest areas.

2) Site analysis

Examine the topography, environmental constraints, traffic flow, and local regulations to inform a suitable design.

3) Preliminary design

Propose a first concept considering user needs and site constraints. Include flower pot locations and urban furniture zones with attention to aesthetics, functionality, and accessibility.

4) Public consultation

Organise meetings with stakeholders and local residents to gather feedback and suggestions on the initial proposal.

5) Design revision and finalisation

Refine the design based on community feedback to ensure coherence with expectations.

6) Detailed planning

Define dimensions, flower pot and furniture positions, and technical specifications. Ensure compliance with urban and safety regulations.

7) Permit acquisition

Secure necessary permits from port authorities, the municipality, or other relevant bodies.

8) Product and plant selection

Choose suitable plant species and select durable, aesthetic urban furniture like benches, planters, litter bins, and lighting.

9) Installation

Install the products according to plan, ensuring compliance with safety and accessibility standards.

10) Ongoing maintenance

Schedule regular watering, cleaning, and maintenance of the plants and urban furniture.

Project objective: A vibrant urban space

1. Vegetation

Planters were placed along the pier and planted with trees and flowering plants. A famous reproduction of “Le Plongeur” sculpture by Idel Ianchelevici now stands prominently at the end of the pier.

The city of Liège also installed PASTEL planters with specific colours and Extrabac units to create a visual rhythm. This plant line includes trees, hanging baskets, and low planters in varied sizes.

2. Safety

To improve pedestrian safety, colourful PASTEL bollards were added. These elements form a visual signal for motorists while reinforcing the port’s identity using the city’s official colour palette.

3. Circulation

Bicycle racks were installed on both sides of the port to encourage soft mobility and provide secure parking for visitors and residents.

Choice of furniture and colours: Reflecting Liège’s visual identity

The riverside development includes:

These elements together reflect the city’s colour identity. Variation in size and tone adds rhythm and coherence to the space.

Create an attractive and distinctive visual atmosphere

For this project, a carefully curated selection of PASTEL and Extrabac planters was chosen to create a distinctive visual identity. By combining various planter styles and strategically blending floral compositions, we are able to play with color palettes and craft captivating arrangements that reflect the true essence of the location.

Color choices can be subtle and complementary to evoke a calming atmosphere, or bold and contrasting to energize and enliven the surroundings. Whether through soft, pastel tones for a romantic ambiance or vibrant hues for a festive spirit, our custom-designed planters become a true artistic canvas—transforming outdoor spaces into living works of art.

This innovative approach to urban greening delivers a unique and memorable visual signature, enhancing both the aesthetic appeal and the character of the environment.
