As part of the outdoor landscaping project for the University of Arras, we contributed to enhancing the campus surroundings by designing an urban layout in corten steel that revitalises this relaxation area. The main objective was to create welcoming, shaded seating zones while reducing impervious surfaces to bring freshness and comfort to students and staff.

OUTDOOR DESIGN AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ARRAS: THE KEY ROLE OF CORTEN STEEL

Design, manufacturing, delivery

To bring this vision to life, we selected activated and stabilised corten steel for its exceptional corrosion resistance and naturally evolving patina, which allows it to blend seamlessly into the campus environment. Thanks to our expertise in rolling, folding and welding, we installed nearly 18 linear metres of corten steel edging to shape green islands. Straight raw corten steel borders were also used to define each landscaped area with elegance.

Altogether, the design offers a coherent and durable visual result, perfectly suited to the standards of a modern campus.

Modular and inviting seating areas

Beyond the corten steel edging, we also manufactured several urban furniture elements to complete the University of Arras’s outdoor layout:

ORIGAMI benches in activated and stabilised corten steel, with seats made of exotic wood slats
Bespoke islands with integrated seating areas combining wood and corten steel
Raw corten steel borders

Exotic wood offers excellent durability and a warm aesthetic, while corten steel reinforces the contemporary character of the space.
Together, these materials blends in perfectly with the surrounding red-brick architecture typical of the region.

Thanks to our design expertise, we delivered a bespoke, robust solution adapted to the northern French climate. These installations create an atmosphere of conviviality, offering students and visitors a pleasant space to relax or work outdoors.

A successful project through close collaboration

We tailored our proposals to meet the functional constraints of the site, while maintaining architectural consistency with existing buildings.
The combination of corten steel and exotic wood blends seamlessly with the local brick façades, resulting in an outdoor space that is both resilient and visually appealing – ready to welcome students, faculty, and visitors in optimal conditions.
