The director of a retirement home contacted us for support in designing and developing a courtyard. We provided assistance throughout the project to help define the most appropriate solution. Our approach takes into account user needs right from the design phase.

Thanks to this project featuring urban furniture, the courtyard becomes a true living space where residents and visitors can gather. Through our products, we provide a tailored solution that meets user needs and project expectations.

By reintroducing greenery via Mosaïque furniture, we create shaded zones over time and help refresh the space.

Courtyard development for a retirement home: tailored solutions with ATECH

Conception, fabrication

The director initially approached ATECH with the idea of installing a water feature. While visually appealing, was it the most appropriate solution?

After assessing the site and its usage, other options proved more relevant. To create a well-suited courtyard in a care home setting, it is essential to consider the needs and expectations of both residents and visitors. Adding planters supports this approach to greening. Numerous benches are installed to create different zones across the space, making it easier for users to appropriate the area. Picnic-style tables encourage social interaction in the heart of the courtyard.
Together, these elements create rest areas and increase use of the courtyard. This dynamic installation transforms the courtyard into a full part of the residence, offering extra functionality and outdoor comfort.

Key steps in designing a courtyard

  1. Site analysis. Observe and measure the space, noting slope, orientation and sun exposure. This helps identify both opportunities and constraints for the future design.
  2. Planning. Define circulation paths, greenery, resting areas and leisure zones.
  3. Ground preparation and installation.
  4. Greening. Once the layout is finalised, vegetation is incorporated.
  5. Furniture installation.
  6. Maintenance. A maintenance plan is essential to ensure long-term durability of the installation.

Taking time to think through each phase ensures a successful, long-lasting courtyard project.

Key considerations for projects in senior residences

When developing outdoor spaces in elderly residences, several key points must be considered:

  • Accessibility: Paths must be wide and easy to navigate for residents with reduced mobility
  • Safety: Slip and fall risks must be anticipated and reduced through material choice and layout.
  • Comfort: Comfortable seating and shade are critical. The presence of plants improves thermal comfort and enhances quality of life.
  • Social connection: Shared spaces encourage conversation and create links between residents, improving daily life.

A complete living space

The project incorporated Mosaïque products, including planters, tables and seating.
The outdoor space was first prepared with PASTEL planters , A-LINEA benches, and Extravase flower posts.

This development turned the courtyard into a true outdoor living room, offering additional space for relaxing, socializing and taking a break.

Benches placed along the walls provide quiet spaces slightly removed from activity zones. The overall layout invites residents to spend more time outdoors.

Product selection and layout

Benches and seats from the PASTEL and A-LINEA ranges are installed on either side of the courtyard, leaving the centre open.

The client also chose Mosaïque picnic tables, with integrated seating and matching planter panels.

Mosaïque products stand out thanks to their unique shapes and precision-cut aluminium. Aluminium was chosen for its strength and flexibility.
An integrated LED lighting system enhances the user experience by night, creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
