Corten steel is an alloy that naturally covers itself with a protective layer called a «patina», which evolves over 18 months before reaching its final appearance. Throughout the process, colour changes occur depending on the light and temperature. It is available raw or blasted and activated, or blasted, activated and stabilised.

Corten steel: composition, patina and finishes

The’Corten steel is an alloy containing copper, chromium and nickel
molybdenum as well as phosphorus. It is a natural material that covers itself in a protective layer called a «patina», which takes on brown shades that evolve over 18 months before reaching its final colour. Throughout the process, the colour changes occur depending on the light and temperature. It is available in sandblasted finish (helps to accelerate the patina), sand enabled (allowing delivery of a product that is patinated throughout), and sand activated and stabilised (used to stop the patina in order to avoid staining the floor in particular). For the latter there are two techniques, either the product is naturally stabilised (naturally activated and stabilised sand) and then the process takes about 4 months (painted steel in Mars 2525 sandblasted finish being an alternative) or the product is varnished with a matt finish and baked in an oven (activated and stabilised matt sand), the’painted steel RAL 8017 colour being an alternative.
