The Audierne Town Hall plans to develop a landscaped roundabout that illustrates the town's DNA. Discover the design and construction stages of the project, as well as the importance of choosing materials suitable for the project's environment: Corten steel activated and stabilized. Thanks to the laser-cut design and lighting installation, a strong visual effect is created both day and night, evoking local identity. Through this inspiration, we show you the importance of considering the site's characteristics and environment when designing a roundabout.

Landscaping a roundabout

What is the process for developing a roundabout?

  1. Site characteristics study: The site study is important for evaluating the characteristics of the terrain and the environment.
  2. Theme Identification: The design of a roundabout can be inspired by a theme that corresponds to local culture and identity. This theme can be chosen based on the region's economic or social activities, local history, or the surrounding nature.
  3. Preliminary Design: The preliminary design of the roundabout must include planning for the addition of decorative aspects. It is important to consider vehicular traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists. The design must also include the selection of appropriate materials for landscaping a roundabout, lighting, sculptures, and other decorative elements.
  4. Approval and financing: Approval from local authorities and financing are necessary before construction work can begin. It is important to ensure that the project meets road safety standards and complies with construction regulations.
  5. Construction and maintenance: The construction of the decorative landscaping must be carried out by qualified professionals. It is important to ensure that regular maintenance is carried out to preserve the aesthetic appearance of the roundabout.

Audierne's roundabout development project: a combination of know-how, sustainability, and local identity

To better understand the choices for landscaping a roundabout, it is important to put the city of Audierne into context.

It is located in Finistère, Brittany, and it is a charming coastal town. It is bordered by the Iroise Sea and the river of Goyen, offering spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. The town is known for its picturesque fishing harbor, where local fishermen bring in their fresh catch daily.

Products, materials, and expertise

The landscaping consists of 4 bottomless cylindrical planters. Thanks to the planters, volumes are created and form the basis of this landscaping's composition. They are made of sandblasted Corten steel, activated and stabilized, as Corten steel is the ideal material in this situation due to the sea air. Indeed, being already oxidized, it cannot degrade. It guarantees durability over time and minimal to no maintenance. This is not the only advantage of Corten steel.

Audierne is a town filled with history and culture, this material blends ideally into the existing landscape without clashing with the built heritage. It is also a base for designing floral and plant arrangements, with its ocher tones, it makes all plant compositions stand out.

In these planters, a laser cut creates a strong visual effect, both day and night, thanks to the LED lighting inside. The various illustrations recall Audierne's identity. To facilitate the installation of plants, bottomless planters have been integrated into the corten planters. This allows for in-ground planting, which is more sustainable and requires less maintenance than potted plants.
