DESIGNING A GREENED SCHOOLyard for more shade and comfort

In response to the challenges of urban heat and student well-being, Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris decided to rethink its courtyard layout, giving greater importance to greenery. The objective: to leverage existing trees, develop new green spaces, and create areas suitable for the various activities of high school students.

A space designed for student well-being

The project is based on a simple conviction: the presence of plants enhances the comfort of outdoor spaces while promoting interaction and collective life. In this courtyard, the existing trees have been enhanced through landscaping that protects their bases and allows students to enjoy their natural shade.

New urban gardens have also been installed to introduce more nature into the establishment. These green spaces help create a more peaceful atmosphere and offer students places conducive to relaxation, socializing, and breaks.

Custom furniture to structure usage

To meet the needs of students, ATECH has designed various greening furniture options combining painted steel and saturated robinia. This combination of materials ensures durability, resistance to heavy use, and aesthetic quality.

Seating, tables, and high-top tables have been distributed throughout the various courtyard areas to create versatile spaces for reading, lunch, or simply for students to share moments together. The robinia wood strips provide additional protection to the wood while highlighting its natural grain.

The ensemble today creates a dynamic and functional space where furniture, plants, and uses complement each other to sustainably improve the students' living environment.

Reintroduce nature into learning spaces

Long dominated by mineral surfaces, schoolyards are evolving today to meet climate challenges and new uses. Through this project carried out for Lycée Louis-le-Grand, ATECH supports this transformation by creating a greener, more comfortable space that better meets students' expectations.

The presence of plants naturally contributes to improving the living environment by providing shade, coolness, and better usability of outdoor spaces. It also encourages interaction, relaxation, and a sense of ownership of the premises by students.

Building on existing trees and incorporating new urban gardens, this landscaping transforms the courtyard into a true living space where nature, furniture, and uses coexist harmoniously. A project that illustrates the capacity of green furniture to create more pleasant, more sustainable, and more resilient spaces in the face of tomorrow's urban challenges.
